Lessons from Sarah on Fear and Faith

Tired of being judged—and even more tired of being

kinda judgy?

Hi, I’m Shannon and though I hate to admit it, I can be… ahem… kinda judgy. Especially when I feel judged by someone else, I’m tempted to hold court in my head, rehearsing all the ways I’m right, and that other person is wrong. Can you relate?

At the same time, we’re living in a “Who am I to judge?” culture. As believers, how can we hold firm to godly convictions while also heeding Scripture’s warning not to judge?

Join me for a study of six stories of judgment and mercy in the Bible. Through the stories of Noah, Rahab, Jonah, and others, you’ll find biblical clarity on judgment and mercy—and you’ll encounter the One who melts your pride, settles your heart, and lavishes you with His mercy.

Are you ready to hand back the gavel?

There’s a better Judge.

How Judgy are You?

On the Podcast: The Judgy Series

I often tell my friends, “I want the long version of the story.” On the Live Like It’s True podcast, you’ll get to hear the long versions of many of the stories I shared in Kinda Judgy. Listen to the following episodes and be encouraged by my friends Kara Seymour, Denise Kooiker, Pam Farrel, Beth Guckenberger, Felicity Carswell, Tami DeArmas, and others.

In other episodes, I’m joined by Bible teachers Lindsay Schott, Glenna Marshall, Erika VanHaitsma, and others to explore the Bible stories featured in Kinda Judgy.

Endorsers of Kinda Judgy:

Asheritah CiuCiu

I’ve known Shannon Popkin as a woman who takes God’s Word seriously while continually inviting her own heart into deeper humility and grace. In Kinda Judgy, she thoughtfully engages Scripture to help us examine our tendency to judge others—and ourselves—through anything other than God’s mercy.

With honesty and biblical clarity, Shannon reminds us that spiritual maturity isn’t about proving we’re right, but about learning to live humbly before God and generously toward others.

Emily Jensen

I can always count on Shannon’s writing to filter life through the lens of Scripture, and Kinda Judgy is no exception.

Though it’s rich with biblical stories and truth, it’s also wonderfully practical. This book offers a refreshing word and a much-needed gentle correction for our self-righteous hearts.

—Emily A. Jensen, coauthor of Risen Motherhood and Gospel Mom

Phylicia Masonheimer

Anyone who has struggled with a critical, judgmental spirit will find both conviction and kindness in Shannon’s book. Kinda Judgy speaks to a struggle most Christian women share: a tendency to analyze the sins of others while downplaying our own. But in these pages you’ll discover more than the reason we wrestle with judgment; you’ll learn how God’s mercy unravels the deep judgment we hold toward ourselves, often projected on those around us.

Our criticism of others has roots in our inability to accept God’s mercy on our own sin. Kinda Judgy will show you the way out of unbiblical judgment, to the righteous judgment we are called to choose.

Jen Oshman

Shannon Popkin writes with truthful precision, helping readers to see our tendency to judge others, and even have contempt for those with whom we disagree. She calls on stories from Scripture and everyday life to hold up a mirror that, I admit, I didn’t want to gaze into for too long.

I was convicted as I read. At the same time, Shannon rightly makes much of the lavish grace and mercy our Father in heaven eagerly gives to those who come to the end of ourselves. I was moved again and again by Jesus’s compassion for sinners like me. In our current cancel culture, this book is a needed exhortation, especially to Christians, to remind us that every single human deserves dignity and no one is too far gone. As we have received mercy, so may we eagerly pass it on.

My First Fiction Writing!

In Kinda Judgy, we explore six stories from different places on the Bible’s timeline—three in the Old Testament and three in the New Testament. To bring the Bible’s unified message of judgment and mercy into even sharper focus, I’ve created this allegory: The Two Doors and the Merciful Judge, set in the Grand Courtroom of the World, where the Judge of All eternally presides.

In this six-part, fictional companion to Kinda Judgy, we’ll imagine Noah, Rahab, Jonah, and others—the same characters featured in Kinda Judgy—entering the Grand Courtroom and encountering the Judge of All.

My hope is that the imagery of the Grand Courtroom will linger in your mind long after you finish the story and help you see more clearly the very real story you are part of. Most of all, I hope you’ll come to know and love more deeply the merciful Judge before whom we will all one day stand.

This series will release in June, 2026.
