Hey there, Control Girl.
Have you been…
- Anxiously pacing in front of your television as you watch the election updates?
- Unable to sleep—worried that there will be more rioting and chaos?
- Overwhelmed with gloom and even despair as you rehearse all of the what if’s?
- Shaking your fist as you listen to a podcaster or newscaster who’s spewing lies?
- Glaring at your neighbor you has the opposing candidate’s sign in her yard?
- Commenting in shock or disgust over what your friends are posting on social media?
- Not talking to your son or daughter or mom or friend because they won’t let you talk sense into them about which way to cast their ballot?
- Not talking to your son or daughter or mom or friend because they won’t stop trying to persuade you about which way to cast your ballot?
1. Rehearse the truth: God is in control.
Turn off your phone, get your Bible and find a quiet place to re-center. Give God full access to your heart and let Him whisper the truth directly to you from the pages of His Word. Here are some of my favorite God-is-in-control passages. (Do you have others? Please share!)
- Isaiah 46:8-11
- “I am God, and there is none like me,… saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose'” (verse 9-10).
- Proverbs 3:5-8
- “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (verse 5).
- Isaiah 40:10-31
- “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand?” (vs. 12).
- “Behold the nations are like a drop from a bucket and are accounted as the dust on the scales” (vs 15).
- Do you not know? Have you not heard? He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength” (vs. 28-29).
- “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand?” (vs. 12).
- Job 38-40:2
- “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (Job 38:4).
- “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?” (Job 39:1).
- “Is it by your command that the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high?” (Job 39:27).
- “Then Job answered the LORD and said, ‘Behold I am of small account; what shall I answer you?'” (Job 40:3).
2. Review what you Do/Don’t have control over.
There are two categories (I talked about these in detail here).
-
- What you can control (yourself).
- What you can’t control (everything else—including the election).
Most of us have very little control over the outcome of this election or the long term outcomes for our nation. We’re just one person among millions. On the other hand we each have much control over ourselves. Consider how you will demonstrate godly self-control in the following ways:
-
- Will you vote prayerfully and responsibly?
- Will you treat other people—each one an image bearer—with the kindness and dignity they deserve? (Moms, read my “5 Control-Girl-Mom Tactics to Stop Using“)
- Will you turn to the Lord with your fears, anger, frustration, and worry?
- Will you refuse to cave into yourself? Will you hold yourself accountable for emotional outbursts or rants?
- Will you strive for unity (not dissention) in your home, workplace, church, and community? (If you have questions on controlling vs. responsible behavior, check out this post.)
