My oldest child is snuggled next to me on the bed. We weave our fingers together and I ask her a question that is quickly becoming familiar.

“What was the best part of your day?”

I lay there and smile as I hear about playground escapades, art projects, and little friends. She’s a talker, this one! After a few minutes, I ask another question.

“Did anything bad or sad happen today?”

Sometimes the answer is no, but today she tells me about a friend who got scraped at recess and how she didn’t get to play at her favorite classroom center. We talk about being a good friend, and taking turns.

My firstborn is in full-time Kindergarten this year. It’s been a big adjustment, mostly for me. I miss her! So, we have begun our “cuddle with questions” routine.

At first I had to beg and plead to get snuggles and answers; she was in a hurry to watch a movie or have playtime. But now she looks forward to these moments together. If I forget, she is quick to remind me. We both enjoy that warm and cozy time of connection, a chance to feel loved and secure.

We have a Heavenly Father who wants to connect with us, too. But like my daughter, we’re often in a hurry. We feel like we don’t have time for God. Or sometimes we don’t know where to start, so we don’t. Other times, we imagine that God is disappointed with us, so we withdraw.

Look at a couple of my favorite Bible verses:

  •  “Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord…” (Jeremiah 29:12-13 ESV)
  • “…that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.'” (Acts 17:27-28 ESV)

God wants to be found by me. He says that even if I’m blindfolded and can’t see, but I’m feeling around for Him, I will bump into Him and find Him!

Here’s how I seek God. With my cup of coffee, I curl up on my couch during nap time and just talk to my Daddy God. I’m a talker, just like my daughter! I tell him about the good parts of my day and thank Him. We talk about the hard parts, and I ask for strength. Sometimes we just talk about the things that are bothering me in the world, and He reminds me of His promises.

If you were to ask my kindergartner if she knows me, her obvious answer would be yes. Of course she knows me! We spend time together. We talk and connect. And it’s the same with God. I’m His child. I know Him. I’ve grown to love the moments I spend with Him, there on my couch during nap time. We both enjoy these warm times of connecting.

If you are God’s child, He loves making you feel loved and secure, too. Won’t you give Him the opportunity, today?
